SLINKY DIRECTOR LEE HASLAM TELLS ALL ABOUT SLINKY'S PLANS FOR 2010 & SLINKY CLASSICS IN 3D VISION

Lee Haslam is one of the leading lights behind south coast superclub Slinky and also runs the successful trance labels Slinky Digital and Digital Remedy.  We've not spoken to him for a while, so with Slinky Classics fast-approaching at the end of this month, we thought what better time to get the low-down on the year that's gone, plus what the future holds for Slinky

1. Hi Lee, at Slinky HQ we’re all looking forward to seeing you at our Slinky Classics night on January the 30th.  How has 2009 been for you personally and have you made any New Year’s resolutions for 2010?

2009 was arguably my best year in my 15 year career... Personally playing at Cream and Judgement in Ibiza were also major highlights and being crowded the most played producer for the second year running on Judge Jules’s Radio show which is listened to globally by thousands.

As for a new year resolution... Amber & I are trying for little ones so I guess it will be be the best dad I possibly can be.

2. Another year has passed for Slinky, and we’re now entering our 13th year.  How was 2009 for Slinky and what’s planned for 2010?

Obviously my main focus 24/7 is the brand and, in a year when alot of people struggled, we came out on top, putting on some amazing events and tours throughout the globe.. In total we did over 30 tours and events in 2009 but in 2010 we are aiming for 80. The introduction of the Slinky In 3D Vision tour concept has been very well received and due to our hard work last year, Slinky really is back at the forefront of the global clubbing scene.

In 2010 we are planning tours and events in Spain, Norway, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Thailand, Korea, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, India, UAE, Brazil, South Africa, Cyprus, Turkey, Canada, U.S.A the list goes on.... I have a feeling I am going to be very very busy this year lol....

3. Was there a favourite Slinky moment you had in 2009 that you can share with us?

I think our 12th birthday in white with Above & Beyond was very special. We have such a great team of people who work with myself and Richard now and one of the greatest fan bases any one could wish for and the atmosphere in the venue was electric, it always is thanks to the Slinky faithful.

4. And what about the labels you currently run, Digital Remedy and Slinky Digital.  How are they faring currently and what’s in store?

Both labels are going well, as most people know I set Digital Remedy up over 3 years ago, originally as an outlet for my own productions but as time has passed I have been signing tracks from some great up and coming producers like Guy Mearns, Michael Dow, Akira Kayosa etc... Its that same ethos that I have transfered to Slinky Digital as well. Its just another outlet for us to keep the Slinky name on a global scale and by nurturing up and coming talent, we are putting alot back into the scene and with it building up a great army of DJ producers which we can use on our tours.

Both labels will be continuing releasing music in 2010 with some big releases coming up including a new single from myself and a re-release of the classic by The Act called “Something About U” so make sure you check them out!

5. Outside of music, clubbing and DJ’ing what other passions do you have that you could tell us about that we might not otherwise know?

I am a massively keen golfer... boring to many I know, but its my only form of relaxation ( depending on how well I play lol ) and its good exercise which is something I struggle with considering the amount of work & travelling I have to do.

6. Some of our newer clubbers might not now how you came to be one of the guys behind Slinky, so any chance of a quick re-cap?

Well alot of people know that I was label manager at hard dance label tidy for over ten years.. During that time I had the pleasure of working with so many great people from Amadeus & Andy ( The Tidy Boys ) to Richard Skaife, who in the early 2000’s was tidy’s brand manager. Richard left in 2004 I believe which was the year that my musical direction began to change back to trance where I originally started in 1996.

By 2007 I really needed to move on so I resigned from tidy and started my label Digital Remedy. In late 2007 Richard took over as MD at Slinky and approached me to become Head Of Events & Music which I did.. since then I feel we have really turned the brand around building it back up to the status it has in the early 2000’s. I am now Director alongside Richard and basically oversee and manage everything that the brand does from it’s own events, tours, label, brand management, radio, licensing.... everything. On top of this I am obviously global resident for the brand and still look after Digital Remedy and produce..

7. Is there anything you think Slinky could improve on?  If so what is it?

There is always room for improvement no matter what you do in life.. As I have just mentioned we have already come along way and with the plans we have for this year, I really am very excited that things will get better and better which when you think we have been in a recession for the last year is a very big thing!

8. Will Slinky still be around in 5 years time, and if so how do you see it manifesting itself?

I’d like to think so... the dance scene has certainly become more global and obviously we already do a plethora of tours already across the globe.. Alot of countries are only just getting into the scene so its always evolving and developing so as long as we keep fresh and current and try to push the boundaries like we are doing with our 3D tour concept, Slinky will always be up there.

9. If you could change one thing in the World, what would it be?  Serious… or not so serious?

I’d like to be able to change my lottery numbers after the results have been announced!

10. Finally, what can we expect at the 02 Bournemouth for Slinky Classics?

Well the obvious answer would be classic trance but I wont be facetious because this show is more than just that.

The concept behind this show is a multi sensory experience! This show launches the Slinky in 3D Vision world tour so on your arrival you will receive some 3D glasses to watch the breathtaking and purpose made Slinky 3D visuals shown at different intervals throughout the show. I have seen these in action and when you see them on the huge screen that we are putting in the venue, it really will be an experience you have never had before in any club night so don’t miss out!!! Last years classcis show was a sell out and we hope that this will follow suit.. Bringing John OO Fleming & M.I.K.E Push to the venue is a big thing for us, considering there history within the scene and the influence that they have had on it musically during the last 15 years. Couple that with the return of past residents Tim Lyall & Gaz White, plus the fact that it’s slinky.fm’s 1st birthday.... that should be enough reasons for you to make sure you buy your ticket!
