RISING STAR BEN NICKY HAS A CHAT WITH SLINKY HQ

Ben Nicky is one of the most exciting, young, & up and coming DJ / Producers of our time. In recent years he has boasted tracks on Vandit and his own Imprint Abstract. Slinky HQ managed to catch up with him ahead of his appearance at Slinky Classics on Jan 30th.

Hi Ben, at Slinky HQ we’re all looking forward to seeing you at our Slinky Classics night on January the 30th.  How has 2009 been for you personally and have you made any New Year’s resolutions for 2010?

Hi Guys! Well i'm very much looking forward to it as well! 2009 has been a crazy year for myself with some big productions, gigs and opportunities. My Resolution is to wear my Ear-Plugs more as my ears are taking a battering constantly!

This gig being Slinky Classics, what’s your classics trance anthem that never leaves your DJ box and why?

Oceanlab- Satellite . Its the first vocal tune that really gave me goosebumps all over!

Another year has passed for Slinky, and we’re now entering our 13th year.  How was 2009 for yourself and what’s planned for 2010?

Well last year I managed production wise to get 4 number 1 tracks on Trackitdown, 12 Radio Plays on BBC Radio One and had my tracks supported from names such as Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, Above and Beyond, Judge Jules etc.. DJ Wise I think I did about 55 gigs which was awesome! 2010 is all about production even more for myself, I had some absolute belters planned and you will be able to catch them on some of the worlds top trance labels, DJ wise I have loads of international gigs finally coming up which Im really looking forward to!

Was there a favourite moment you had in 2009 that you can share with us?

Playing before Ferry Corsten in Bristol had to be one of them, And for him to praise me on my Productions and Djing Skills was amazing!

How did you get your big break in the world of trance?

I started from scratch 3 years ago with nothing. Some people get things handed on a plate which I guess is always cool but I can honestly say I have worked very hard every day until I can do no more! Whether it is doing my podcast, running my record label, networking with club owners, making music, djing etc.. Finally a little bit of luck has come my way and I'm now signed to Most Wanted DJ Management who will handle all my gigs etc, so this has taken alot of weight off my shoulders! (www.mostwantedglobal.com)

Outside of music, clubbing and DJ’ing what other passions do you have that you could tell us about that we might not otherwise know?

Before I started Djing, I played for Bristol City Football Academy so I always like to play the odd game with mates when I can. Other than that Music really occupys my whole life at the moment.

If you could change one thing in the World, what would it be?  Serious… or not so serious?

The Wages Footballers get, when theres Soldiers in Iraq earning next to nothing, it annoys me!

Finally, what can we expect at the 02 Bournemouth for Slinky Classics?

I'm playing quite late so I will be belting out the driving / uplifting trance with the odd techy twist thrown in.. Oh, and of course some Classics!
