U4IC DJ'S JOIN US @ SLINKY HQ FOR A GOOD OLD CHIN WAG
Dan Apps and Phil Collins are U4IC DJs, a dynamic duo hailing from Southampton who have made great strides recently on the UK trance scene. This month sees them take to the decks for Slinky Classics, so we thought it would be good to get the low-down on the guys including news on their own record label, and plans for 2010.
Hi Guys, could you give us a brief introduction as to who and what the U4IC DJs are?
We are Dan Apps and Phil Collins aka U4IC (euphoric) DJs, a dynamic duo and rising stars erupting into the modern trance scene.
At Slinky HQ we’re all looking forward to seeing you at our Slinky Classics night on January the 30th. How has 2009 been for you personally and have you made any New Year’s resolutions for 2010?
2009 was a great year for us on a lot of levels, we formed our new record label SPX Digital which has already had a number of great releases, many getting leading exposure from all the major players including Radio 1’s Judge Jules, Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, PVD and Ferry Corsten. Quite a few have been signed to various cd mix compilations including the trance world series on Armada records.
Last year our focus was the label and productions, but gig wise we were still very busy, we performed at some high profile events including events in London, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham plus the legendary South Coast Spitbank Fort where we headlined the main outdoor stage.
This gig being Slinky Classics, what’s your classics trance anthem that never leaves your DJ box and why?
Its got to be Three Drives- Greece 2000 because it never fails to deliver on the dance floor and brings back some great memories from over the last decade, particularly Ibiza!
Another year has passed for Slinky, and we’re now entering our 13th year. How was 2009 for yourself and what’s planned for 2010?
2009 surpassed all expectations and 2010 has started off with a bang having been given the great honour of remixing another all time classic Angelic- It’s My Turn under our new alias Nrapture with Corderoy. We’ve also got some great projects in the pipeline collaborating with a highly respected band as well as forming ‘Frequency’ a new promotions venture kicking off with Judge Jules at ‘Bliss’ clubrooms in Southampton on the 12th of Feb! Also on the production front we have a number of remix projects for various labels including Reset and Mondo and originals which have been snapped up and are due for release in 2010.
Was there a favourite moment you had in 2009 that you can share with us?
One of the best moments was the SPX label launch party performing one of our own productions ‘3 Spirit’ live with Corderoy…. ‘The crowd were awesome!’
How did you get your big break in the world of trance?
We got our big break through hard graft and the school of hard knocks and persistence paid off when we played at the Paul Okenfold album launch which was one of our first high profile events.
You produce your own tracks, is it ever difficult working as a team and how does the partnership work in the studio? Do you have separate roles?
No we work well as a team...of course it has had its moments but our partnership goes back a long way and now we find that we sing off the same hymn sheet... either one of us can have an idea and we bounce it between us until a seed comes to fruition.
Outside of music, clubbing and DJ’ing what other passions do you have that you could tell us about that we might not otherwise know?
For both it would have to be footy...we’re both passionate Southampton supporters. Phil is a keen runner and we both regularly work out at the gym.
If you could change one thing in the World, what would it be? Serious… or not so serious?
Phil’s gob! So I can get a word in edgeways! No, on a serious note illegal downloading has got to be regulated... piracy is strangling the digital domain.
Finally, what can we expect at the 02 Bournemouth for Slinky Classics?
Lots of energy, clever live mash- ups incorporating all the favourite classics of the last decade and of course the chemistry that U4IC are renowned for!
